Trigonometry

  • Define/Describe trigonometry
    • Definition: The branch of mathematics that deals with the relationships between the sides and the angles of triangles and the calculations based on them, particularly the trigonometric functions.
    • It is an essential in many branches in science and technology. A branch of trigonometry called spherical trigonometry studies the use of spheres, it is important in astronomy and navigation
  • Describe some of the early uses? Why was it invented?
    • Ancient egyptians lacked the concept of angle measures, but they still studied ratios of triangles. By the 10th century, Islamic Mathematicians were already using the six trigonometric functions, and using them to solve spherical functions
    • It was invented for an easier solution to solve spheres, and navigation was needed back then, so trigonometry was also used to make maps.
  • Describe a current use of trigonometry
    • One way it is being used is in astronomy, to find the distance to nearby stars. Another way is in Geography, to measure distances between landmarks, and it is also used in satellite navigation systems.
  • Find the height of two objects outside. Explain your work.
    • My Car, height up to eye 69 In. = 15.9 Inches + 69 In.
        • 84.9 In.
    • Height of pole, height up to Cy's eye 64 In. = 43 In. + 64 In.
      •  21 In.

Pizza

Here are the diameters of each kind of thin piece. Note: The pieces are all the cheese with the original pizza sauce, thin style.
Small: Diameter: 10" price: $9.25
Medium: Diameter: 12" price: $11.45
Large: Diameter: 14" price: $14.00

Using the area formula for a circle: πr^2, I would now find the areas of each size.
Small: 78.54 in.^2
medium: 113.1 in.^2
large: 153.94 in.^2

For each size I shall list how much more pizza you get. I used division to find the amount of pizza you get with each size in comparison with another.
For medium you get 1.44 times more pizza than the small size.
For the large size you get 1.36 times more pizza than the medium size.

I will then take the price divided by the area of each pizza to find the price of pizza per square inch.
Small: $.11 per inch^2
Medium: $.10 per inch^2
large: $.09 per inch^2

This data shows that you save about $.01 per inch for each size larger you purchase. This is a small investment possibly worth the purchase if the whole pizza is devoured and not wasted. The formula to find the area of a circle was helpful and essential to find the results. It was key that you divide by 2 to find the radius, as the measurement of a pizza is its diameter. The data of how much times more pizza you get for each size is only important when a costumer needs a comparison when deciding what size to purchase. It may also be used when deciding what to price each size as from an corporate standpoint.
Area is very important for many reasons. It may be used to determine how much of something is required, the price of matter, and many other reasons. A good example would be used with carpentry. If a room is 15X20 feet, the area formula must be used to find how much carpet is required. A mistake of using the perimeter formula would be costly and timely. Area needs to be found to determine how big something really is, and not how it may appear from another point-of-view.
